'Everyone should have at least two copies of Brave Enough: one to keep near the bath, and one to give out, generously, to whoever needs the help.' The Pool Across the world, millions of people have found life and depth in the words of Cheryl Strayed. Whether it has been in her bestselling memoir Wild or in her collection of advice on love and life, Tiny Beautiful Things, she has been a companion to those who feel alone, a balm to those who hurt, a co-conspirator to those who laugh, and a steel-toecapped boot to those who need tough love. In this courageous and glittering collection of quotes and thoughts, Cheryl Strayed shows that no matter how much life might get you down, words can have the power to pick you back up. The warning of a threat reborn. "Two people caught in the grip of wanderlust, " as Alford and Duguid describe themselves, this Canadian pair has traveled for nearly two decades, singly and together, throughout Asia, Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa, and North America. As they have pursued their passions for travel photography and culinary research, they have found around the world a shared and nourishing element of culture and cuisine: flatbreads, the simplest, oldest, and most marvelously varied form of bread known to humankind. Immersing themselves in local cultures - from the Malaysian island of Penang and the high Himalayan passes of Tibet to the market stalls of Understanding Nursing Research: Building an Evidence-Based Practice pdf Provence and the pueblos of New Mexico - Alford and Duguid have studied bread baking and cooking with local bakers, in family kitchens, with street vendors, and at neighborhood restaurants and cafes. In Flatbreads and Flavors they share more than sixty recipes for flatbreads of every origin and description: tortillas from Mexico, pita from the Middle East, naan from Afghanistan, chapatti from India, pizza from Italy, and French fougasse. As well, within each of the eight regional chapters of the book, they provide 150 exuberant recipes for traditional accompaniments to the breads. These include chutneys and curries, salsas and stews, rich samplings of the Mediterranean mezze table and the Scandinavian smorgasbord, and such delectable pairings as Chinese Spicy Cumin Kebabs wrapped in Uighur nan or Lentils with Garlic, Onion, and Tomato spooned onto chapatti. Oven-baked, grilled, fried, skillet-baked, steamed, or even baked beneath the desert sand, flatbreads are a fascinating, satisfying, and simple form that brings wholesome grains into our diet. They can be made from every grain imaginable: wheat, rye, corn, oats, millet, sorghum, teff, rice, buckwheat. They can be unleavened or leavened. They can be made so thin that they become transparent, or they can be two inches thick and sliceable. But Flatbreads and Flavors is not

Richard J. Evans: In Defence of History

In Defence of History

Description

In this volume, English historian Richard Evans offers a defence of the importance of his craft. At a time of deep scepticism about our ability to learn anything from the past, even to recapture any serious sense of past cultures and ways of life, Evans shows us why history is both possible and necessary. His demolition of the wilder claims of post-modern historians, who deny the possibility of any realistic grasp of history, seeks to be witty and well-balanced. He takes us into the historians' workshop to show us just how good history gets written, and explains the deadly political dangers of losing a historical perspective on the way we live our lives. This new edition contains an extensive afterword by the author.

Robert J. Ringer: To Be or Not to Be Intimidated?: That Is the Question

To Be or Not to Be Intimidated?: That Is the Question

Description

Because human nature remains constant through the ages, the book's principles and philosophy are even more relevant today than when they were originally published. In the 1970s, this classic created a firestorm among critics, who relentlessly mis-characterised it as a guide to getting ahead by intimidating others. Readers, however, quickly discovered that it was really a book about how to defend yourself against intimidating people. The intimidator in someone's life at any given time might be a deal-killing attorney, overbearing boss or supervisor, annoying co-worker, petty bureaucrat, unreasonable client, or unscrupulous competitor. Now the timeless message of To Be or Not to Be Intimidated? can be applied to the problems of a whole new generation of people who are struggling to make sense out of today's world of chaos and uncertainty. The book explains, in candid terms, what intimidation is, why you become intimidated, and how you can avoid the mental lapses that can cause even the most successful people to sometimes fall victim to intimidation.

`The twists and turns will have readers shaking their heads while devouring the next page.` --USA TODAY on Raven Calls detail of the meniscus For over fifteen years, David and Micki Colfax educated their children at home. They don't think of themselves as pioneers, though that's what they became. Artie Shaw's Jazz Technic, Bk 1: Scales & Exercises

Description

The exercises in this book are designed to help students learn the scales, articulations, technic, and style necessary to play in the jazz idiom, particularly in the Big Band or swing styles.

Here comes Autumn. "Suffice it to say, I was hooked in the first few chapters. It was hot, it was sexy, and it really shows that J. Kenner knows how to write in this genre. I can't wait to get my hands on "Heated, " the next book in the series, and see whose hands get on whom. Enjoy!"--"Eager Reader" In modern times, the Christian faith's claim to possess a unique revelation of God has faced numerous challenges. A central issue has been the role of the Bible. While some have continued to defend the view that the Bible, inspired by God, is his self-revelation in a direct way, others have argued that God's revelation is to be found primarily in his actions, or in the person of Jesus Christ, rather than in the Scriptures as such. In a fresh approach, Peter Jensen argues that it is better to follow the biblical categories of the knowledge of God and the gospel, rather than to start from 'revelation' as an abstract concept. First Dr Jensen focuses on revelation, whether 'special' or 'general', from the viewpoint of the knowledge of God through the gospel. Next, he examines the nature and authority of Scriptures and our approach to reading it. Finally, he turns to the revelatory work of the Holy Spirit through illumination. The result Artie Shaw's Jazz Technic, Bk 1: Scales & Exercises free download pdf is a creative and compelling exposition of the evangelical understanding of revelation for the contemporary scene.

Professor of Archeology Thomas Wynn,Dr Frederick L Coolidge: How to Think Like a Neandertal

How to Think Like a Neandertal

Description

There have been many books, movies, and even TV commercials featuring Neandertals-some serious, some comical. But what was it really like to be a Neandertal? How were their lives similar to or different from ours? In How to Think Like a Neandertal, archaeologist Thomas Wynn and psychologist Frederick L. Coolidge team up to provide a brilliant account of the mental life of Neandertals, drawing on the most recent fossil and archaeological remains. Indeed, some Neandertal remains are not fossilized, allowing scientists to recover samples of their genes-one specimen had the gene for red hair and, more provocatively, all had a gene called FOXP2, which is thought to be related to speech. Given the differences between their faces and ours, their voices probably sounded a bit different, and the range of consonants and vowels they could generate might have been different. But they could talk, and they had a large (perhaps huge) vocabulary-words for places, routes, techniques, individuals, and emotions. Extensive archaeological remains of stone tools and living sites (and, yes, they did often live in caves) indicate that Neandertals relied on complex technical procedures and spent most of their lives in small family groups. The authors sift the evidence that Neandertals had a symbolic culture-looking at their treatment of corpses, the use of fire, and possible body coloring-and conclude that they probably did not have a sense of the supernatural. The book explores the brutal nature of their lives, especially in northwestern Europe, where men and women with spears hunted together for mammoths and wooly rhinoceroses. They were pain tolerant, very likely taciturn, and not easy to excite. Wynn and Coolidge offer here an eye-opening portrait of Neandertals, painting a remarkable picture of these long-vanished people and providing insight, as they go along, into our own minds and culture.

Description

Miracles are not for the deserving, but for the believing! Deep within every person is a longing for the miraculous. Yet, the hope for the miraculous is clouded by the many voices that make miracles seem difficult or unattainable. Today, in The Anatomy of a Miracle, hope will return. Regardless of personal beliefs, you will be able to connect with the immutable laws of the miraculous. This book is not religious, yet it honors thousands of years of religious teaching. It is not scientific, yet it uses modern scientific discovery to explain the concepts of the miraculous in words that make sense to the 21st century mind. It is the perfect marriage of science and faith. In The Anatomy of a Miracle Dr. Richards explains exactly how to experience your miracle. Miracles are part of the fabric of humanity! Once you discover these immutable laws, living in the miraculous will be as natural as breathing!

Leonard Gro: The Last Jews in Berlin

The Last Jews in Berlin

Description

In February 1943, four thousand Jews went underground in Berlin. By the end of the war, all but a few hundred of them had died in bombing raids or, more commonly, in death camps. This is the real-life story of some of the few of them - a young mother, a scholar and his countess lover, a black-market jeweler, a fashion designer, a Zionist, an opera-loving merchant, a teen-age orphan - who resourcefully, boldly, defiantly, luckily survived. In hiding or in masquerade, by their wits and sometimes with the aid of conscience-stricken German gentiles, they survived. They survived the constant threat of discovery by the Nazi authorities or by the sinister handful of turncoat Jewish "catchers" who would send them to the gas chambers. They survived to tell this tale, which reads like a thriller and triumphs like a miracle. "The author's skillful selection of detail and his narrative drive have created the type of footnote [to history] that illuminates an entire subject." - New York Times Book Review "A tour de force ...A consummately suspenseful narrative ...remindful, in [its] exquisite detail, of Capote's In Cold Blood" - Los Angeles Times "An historian's book, a storyteller's book, and - most of all - a reader's book . ..All the real-life stuff of a John le Carre novel" - Los Angeles Herald Examiner

Gaspard Winckler, master forger, is trapped in a basement studio on the outskirts of Paris, with his paymaster's blood on his hands. The motive for this murder? A perversion of artistic ambition. After a lifetime lived in the shadows, he has strayed too close to the sun. Fittingly for such an enigmatic writer, Portrait of a Man is both Perec's first novel and his last. Frustrated in his efforts to The Last Jews in Berlin free epub find a publisher, he put it aside, telling a friend: 'I'll go back to it in ten years when it'll turn into a masterpiece, or else I'll wait in my grave until one of my faithful exegetes comes across it in an old trunk.' An apt coda to one of the brightest literary careers of the twentieth century, it is - in the words of David Bellos, the 'faithful exegete' who brought it to light - 'connected by a hundred threads to every part of the literary universe that Perec went on to create - but it's not like anything else that he wrote.

Stephen Shore,David Campany,Marta Daho: Stephen Shore: Survey

Stephen Shore: Survey

Description

Stephen Shore has had a significant influence on multiple generations of artists and photographers. Even for the youngest photographers working today, his work remains an ongoing and indisputable reference point. This book copublished with Fundacion MAPFRE in conjunction with the first-ever retrospective exhibition, includes over 250 images that span Shores impressive and productive career. The images range from 1969 to 2013, with series such as Early Works, Amarillo, New York City, American Surfaces, and Uncommon Places, among others. Stephen Shore: Survey elucidates Shore's contributions, as well as the historiographical interpretations of his work that have influenced photographic culture over the past four decades. Both the exhibition and the narrative of the catalogue are conceptualized around three particularly revealing aspects of Shore's work, including his analysis of photographic and visual language, his topographical approach to the contemporary landscape, and his significant use of color within a photographic context.

Gaspard Winckler, master forger, is trapped in a basement studio on the outskirts of Paris, with his paymaster's blood on his hands. The motive for this murder? A perversion of artistic ambition. Take a peek at this new novelty title-lift-the-flaps and an attached plush give this board book loads of play value! The successful weblog Where They Create documents studios where creativity takes place by showing the work of interior photographer Paul Barbera. Now it's time to make a book. Where they Create captures thirty studios from all around the world; studios of painters, sculptors, designers, architects, advertising agencies, and many others, some very well known, others only starting out. The studios of Wallpaper* magazine, Clive Wilkinson Architects, Jeremiah Goodman, and Opening Ceremony are included. Important to Barbera is that the photographed studios are All Children Flourishing: Igniting the Greatness of Our Children: The Nurtured Heart Approach--A Parenting Paradigm for the New Millennium download book somehow connected to someone Barbera knows and that he likes the creative space or the work they do. Churchland appreciates that the brain-based understanding of the mind can unnerve even our greatest thinkers. At a conference she attended, a prominent philosopher cried out, "I hate the brain; I hate the brain!" But as Churchland shows, he need not feel this way. Accepting that our brains are the basis of who we are liberates us from the shackles of superstition. It allows us to take ourselves seriously as a product of evolved mechanisms, past experiences, and social influences. And it gives us hope that we can fix some grievous conditions, and when we cannot, we can at least understand them with compassion.
